Mexico City surprised us in the best possible way.
Mexico City (CDMX) is vibrant, historic, artistic, walkable, and perfect for those who love culture, architecture, food, and a little bit of luxury on a budget. We expected colour, history and incredible food — but what we experienced was so much more layered. CDMX is a city where ancient civilisations meet modern design, where street food sits comfortably beside rooftop fine dining, and where leafy parks soften the edges of a buzzing metropolis.
If you’re visiting Mexico City for the first time, these are the spots we genuinely believe are worth your time.
Visit Teotihuacán
Just about an hour from the city lies Teotihuacán, one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Home to the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, this ancient city once held over 100,000 inhabitants. Walking and standing beneath structures built nearly 2,000 years ago is grounding and surreal all at once.
Travel tip: Go early to avoid crowds and strong midday sun.
Dine Inside the Caves at La Gruta Restaurant
After exploring Teotihuacán, have lunch at La Gruta, a restaurant carved into a volcanic cave just outside the archaeological site. Candlelight, traditional Mexican dishes and the natural curve of the cave walls make this one of the most unique dining experiences in the country. It’s atmospheric, romantic and genuinely memorable.
Chapultepec Park
Bosque de Chapultepec is one of the largest urban parks in the world — larger than Central Park in New York. Within the park you’ll find Chapultepec Castle, Museums a lake, food vendors and peaceful walking paths.
We also found one of the most beautiful Starbucks locations tucked inside the park, surrounded by greenery — the perfect coffee break between exploring.
Try Chapulines (Yes, the Crickets)
Chapulines — seasoned crickets with limón, salt and chilli — are a traditional Mexican snack.
They’re crunchy, citrusy and surprisingly flavourful. Whether you love them or simply try them once for the experience, it’s part of understanding local culture. Vendors sell this at the park - so we encourage you to be adventurous and try it out.
Visit Biblioteca Vasconcelos
If you appreciate architecture and design, Biblioteca Vasconcelos is non-negotiable.
Often called one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, its suspended bookshelves, industrial design and indoor gardens feel almost cinematic. Even if you’re not there to read, it’s worth visiting simply to experience the space.
Explore the Zócalo (Centro Histórico)
The Zócalo, Mexico City’s main square, is one of the largest public squares in the world.
Surrounded by the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, it’s the historic and political heart of the city. You can feel centuries of layered history in this one space.
Explore the Neighbourhoods
Where you stay matters in Mexico City.
We loved walking through Colonia Cuauhtémoc, which sits along Paseo de la Reforma. It’s central, leafy, well-connected and less chaotic than some of the more tourist-heavy areas.
Other excellent neighbourhoods for first-time visitors:
Roma Norte
Condesa
Juárez
Each offers its own personality, cafés and charm.
Walk Paseo de la Reforma
Paseo de la Reforma is Mexico City’s grand boulevard — lined with monuments, embassies, museums and skyline views.
It feels expansive, elegant and distinctly metropolitan.
Stop by Reforma 222 or Fórum Buenavista
If you need a casual break from sightseeing, modern shopping centres like Reforma 222 or Fórum Buenavista offer dining, retail and a glimpse into everyday city life.
They’re convenient, polished and easy to incorporate into your day.
Visit Ripley’s Believe It or Not! and the Wax Museum
Ripley's Believe It or Not! Mexico City offers a fun and unexpected break from traditional sightseeing.
The museum features unusual artefacts, interactive exhibits, and fascinating displays from around the world. Your visit also includes access to the wax museum, where you can see lifelike figures of celebrities, historic figures, and cultural icons.
